1. Here are some beautiful classic road-tripping routes in California.
Pacific Coast Highway (PCH)
There are wonderful options including dramatic sea cliffs, sun-soaked surfing towns, playful harbor seals and the Golden Gate Bridge. You’d better avoid driving here in the spring and summer months, when the central and northern coastline can be socked in by fog and the rainy season can lead to landslides. Instead, September and October will yield the sunniest skies and some of the best weather as you spend a week checking this beauty off your bucket list.
Highway 49 (Hwy 49)
That highway number is significant: It is in memory of the 49 people who came seeking for fortune in California’s original Gold Rush. Today the route winds through Gold Country towns such as Placerville
and Nevada City, past ghostly Old West mines and Victorian buildings. Hwy 49 comes mighty close to Yosemite National Park (15 miles) and Lake Tahoe (75 miles), both of which are good places for family camping. Route 66
Enjoy your trip on America’s “Mother Road”, which brought Dust Bowl refugees, Holly-wood starlets and hippies to California. Drive slowly from the desert to the Pacific Ocean, pulling up alongside retro relics, sleeping in a tipi hotel and fueling up in neon-lit diners. Avenue of the Giants
The incredible 32-mile road at Humboldt Redwoods State Park is canopied by the world’s tallest trees. It’s one of the most justifiably celebrated drives in California. The best time is in the morning when sunlight glints off dew-drenched ferns. Among the majestic (壮观的) woods along the Avenue, there is an interesting four-sided hearth, designed by renowned architect Julia Morgan. Walking trails wind through all the woods for proper tree-hugging.

2. In the winter of 1910, Dr. Wu Lien-Teh stepped off a train in the northern Chinese city of Harbin. He was there to solve a medical mystery, at great personal risk. Over the past few months, an unknown disease had swept along the railways of northeast China, killing 99.9% of its victims. The Qing Imperial court had sent the Cambridge-educated Dr. Wu north to stop the epidemic.
When Dr Wu arrived in Harbin on Christmas Eve, 1910, he carried little in the way of medical instruments and had only one assistant. One of Wu' s first acts upon arrival was to set up special quarantine(隔离) units and to order lockdowns to stop infected persons from traveling and spreading the disease. He had teams check households for possible cases, and even managed to convince au
thorities to completely close the railways in the early weeks of 1911. Of particular concern was the upcoming Chinese New Year holiday, which had become a great annual migration of people traveling across the country to see their families.
Thanks to Dr. Wu's efforts, the number of plague victims began to die down, and by March 1, 1911, the epidemic was fully contained. The pneumonic (肺炎的) plague outbreak of 1910-1911 lasted nearly four months, affected five provinces and six major cities, and accounted for over 60,000 deaths. It is clear that without the brave and decisive actions taken by Dr. Wu, it could have been much worse. Had the epidemic gone unchecked, allowing holiday rail passengers to spread the disease to the rest of China could have meant a catastrophic loss of life and possibly a global health crisis.
In April 1911, Dr. Wu chaired an International Plague Conference in Shenyang, attended by scientists from 11 counties including the United States, Great Britain, Russia, Japan and France. They praised Dr. Wu for his handling of the 1910-1911 outbreak. For a time, Dr. Wu was the world's most famous plague fighter, a title be defended in a malaria epidemic in China in 1919, and a return of plague in 1921.

3. In the near future, instead of going to your wardrobe (衣柜) to choose something to throw on for your next video call, you might turn to your virtual wardrobe to pick out a 3D digital dress to wear. At least, that's what a number of people in the fashion and tech space are relying on as more businesses look to the promise of digital fashion. Moreover, those virtual clothes won't just be for you
r video calls, but could eventually be worn all over the virtual world, and eventually, perhaps, viewed on your body in the real world through the Augmented Reality (AR) glasses.
“There are more and more second worlds' where you can express yourself. But there is probably an underestimation of the value being attached to individuals who want to express themselves in a virtual world with a virtual product, through a virtual im age,”a marketing officer Robert said. As the field develops, there are two ways of using digital clothes—wearing them yourself through AR and providing digital clothes for your virtual body.
But why should we replace our physical clothes? Supporters say there's unlimited creative expression through digital clothes, which now look increasingly more elegant thanks to developments in 3D and AR technology. “Clothing represents an expression of a personality. It always exists in the physical world, and it will exist in the virtual world,” said Simon Whitehouse, a designer.
He explained, “From the brand side, it's incredibly profitable to sell clothes without producing physical clothes. It's reinventing an entire supply chain. There's no water usage, there's very limited CO2 emission. There are no samples being sent out or returned. There are no show rooms, and there's no physical prototype (实物模型).”
1. What can you probably do in the near future according to paragraph 1?
A.Open a virtual fashion clothing store.
B.Design 3D digital clothes for yourself.
C.Buy a bigger wardrobe for your bedroom.
D.Wear virtual clothes made by digital technology.
2. What can we infer from Simon's words in paragraph 3?
A.AR technology will bring a challenge to people.
B.One's character will be seen in the virtual world.
C.Digital clothes will be more convenient for people.
D.One's expression only can be seen in the physical world.
3. What is Simon's attitude to digital clothing?
A.Approving. B.Doubtful.
C.Unclear. D.Grateful.
4. What is the text mainly about?
A.The increase in AR glasses. B.The digital fashion in the future. C.The virtual body in digital clothes. D.AR glasses made by new technology.
4. Science reporting on climate change does lead Americans to adopt more accurate beliefs and support government action on the issue, but these gains are fragile, a new study suggests. Researchers found that these accurate beliefs fade quickly when people are exposed to coverage skeptical of climate change.
月半弯张学友“It is not the case that the American public does not respond to scientifically informed reporting when they are exposed to it,” said Thomas Wood, associate professor of political science at the Ohio State University. “But even truly accurate science reporting recedes from people’s frame of reference very quickly.”
Results showed that accurate science reporting didn’t persuade only politicians and people who initi
ally rejected human-caused climate change also had their opinions shifted by reading accurate articles. The study involved 2,898 online participants who participated in four waves of the experiment during the fall of 2020.
In the first wave, they all read authentic articles in the popular media that provided information reflecting the seientifie views on climate change. In the second and third waves, they read either another scientific article, an opinion article that was skeptical of
climate science, or an article on an unrelated subjeet. In the fourth wave, the participants simply were asked their beliefs about the science of climate change and their policy attitudes.
To rate participants’ scientific understanding. the researchers asked after each wave if they believed that climate change is happening and has a human cause. To measure their attitudes, researchers asked participants if they favored government action on climate change and if they favored renewable energy.
“What we found suggests that people need to hear the same accurate messages about climate change again and again. If they only he ar it once, it recedes very quickly,” Wood said. It was significant that accurate reporting had positive effects on all groups, including those who originally rej
ected climate change. But it was even more encouraging that it affected attitudes.
1. What doe s the underlined word “recedes” in paragraph 2 mean?
A.Increases. B.Graduates. C.Disappears. D.Strikes.
2. What does paragraph 4 mainly tell us?
A.The research object. B.The research result.

3. Why did researchers ask participants the second question?
A.To survey the government’s satisfaction rate.
不文女学堂蒙嘉慧B.To make an assessment on their attitudes.
C.To teach them scientific understanding.
D.To measure action on climate change.
