1. Kate Humble: Books that changed my life
Kate Humble is    a writer and broadcaster specializing in science, wildlife and rural affairs. Together with her husban d site runs Humble by Nature,    a rural skills education cent re on working farm near Monmouth in the Wye Valley.
Winnie the Pooh
by A A Milne
My father used to read this to me when I was very young — he used different voices for all the animals. The characterization (角设定) was so clever; we all know someone just like each inhabitant of the Hundred Acre Wood: gloomy Eeyore; thick but loyal Pooh; enthusiastic Tigger.
A A Milne was masterful in exploring the way they got along together, opening my eyes to how society really works.
Last Chance to See
by Douglas Adams and Mark Carwardine
This book tells of the authors, adventures as they set out to
find the rarest of animals, those on the edge of extinction.
Their travels are rather exciting and they share    a wonde rful humour, which really appealed to me. Yet underpinning (支
撑) everything is the realization that we can't just sit ba ck and allow species to disappear.
Picture Palace
by Paul Theroux
I've always loved Theroux's travel writing, but this novel took
my breath away. The words aren't long or complicated but, from that first paragraph, his writing grabs you by the nose hairs and drags
you along. I had an art teacher who told me, “You're only an artist when you've found your own style, not when you're copying someone else, and Theroux represents this.”

2. Friday night, I was struggling to choose a good movie to watch.
I spent 20 minutes looking through hundreds of choices at Amazon
Video and still couldn’t decide. In the back of my mind, I was thinking that I had to choose a great movie to watch, because if didn’t I would be wasting my time. I thought that instead of
watching a bad movie, I would be better off using my time in a more meaningful way (I see this as an opportunity cost). After seeing the reviews and asking around for suggestions, ended up watching LaLa Land, a popular movie that most of my friends have seen recently.
The next day, I went to Duane Reade to buy toothpaste and was overwhelmed again by the large quantity of the choice. I started wondering if more choices empower consumers or just make them think they are empowered, when in reality they are just at a loss.
From finding a good restaurant to searching for your life partner, everything is all about choices; big or small, they are all related. Take dating life in New York for example. There are an endless range
of choices which can lead to many New Yorkers finding it hard to make a decision. It is a big city with a lot of lonely “I could do better” people that are constantly searching for the next best one.
It doesn’t contradict with pr oviding people choices and information to empower them, as there is difference between having a reasonable number of choices and an overwhelming amount. When we are overwhelmed with the number of choices we have, we end up less satisfied with the choice we make. You might calculate the opportunity cost and think about “what if”.
I’ve started to realize that living a life with simplicity can sometimes be a challenge, but it is certainly worth it.

3. Imagine possessing something that you loved so much. Imagine what it would feel like if you lost it. While that item may be something as simple as a toy, you would still feel very upset, but you could replace it with a new one. Now imagine losing something
that you depend on for survival and cannot be replaced. That is what it would be like if we lost the natural environment around us.
Firstly, I believe the environment should be protected because it supports human life. One of the largest examples is that we get all of our food and drinks from the environment. If the environment were to be destroyed beyond revival, then the human race would be over in months. Scientists have to find another planet with similar conditions to the Earth, and if it's found, we don’t have the technology to get to that planet in time.
Secondly, I believe that the environment serves as an amazing educational tool for students. When I was in second grade, I had an absolute interest in animals. When we had a field trip to the Daggerwing Nature Center, I was very excited. When we got there, I could hardly believe what I was seeing. There was a bridge to get to the main building, and under the bridge was a small swamp (沼泽) with turtles, fish, and my personal favorite, alligators. I was so surprised that I almost ran into the tour guide. We walked into the building and saw various animals in their habitats. I was so inspired by this visit. Six years later, I have taken an animal behavior class for three weeks. Meeting by chance with the environment can inspire people, and if preserved, it will continue to inspire people.
In conclusion, the environment is so valuable because it can't be replaced, keeps us alive, and serves as a great educational tool.

4. In the story of “The crow and the Pitcher” from Aesop’s Fables, a thisty crow (乌鸦)drops stones into a narrow jar to raise the low level of water inside so he can take a drink.
Now scientists have evidence to back up that story. Crows
actually do understand how to make water displacement (移位) work to their advantage, experiments show. The results suggest that the birds are, at least in some aspects, as smart as first-graders.
Researchers, led by Sarah Jelbert at the University of Auckland
in New Zealand, presented six crows with tubes filled with water. Inside the tubes, a worm or piece of meat on a piece of wood was floating, just out of reach of the crow. In front of the tubes, the researchers arranged several rubber erasers that would sink, and some plastic objects that would float. The crows found out that they could drop the erasers into the tubes in order to raise the water level and get their snack.
However, the birds handled awkwardly in experiments in which they could choose to drop objects in either a wide tube or a narrow one to get a snack, the researchers said. Dropping objects into narrow tube would lift the water level by a greater amount and put the treat within reach after just two drops; while it took around seven drops to raise the snack to the same level in the wide tube. The crows obviously didn’t realize this, and most of them went for the wide tube first.
Previous studies showed that chimps and human children can solve similar tasks. In a 2011 study, chimps and kids found out that they could put water into a tube to reach a peanut that was floating in a small amount of water at the bottom.
