Dolce & Gabbana’s New Ad! Is it Racist?
Updated: Dolce & Gabbana was forced to cancel its first fashion show in Shanghai after its online marketing campaign that was considered racist by Chinese social media drew the attention of the Chinese government. Read the full story here.
Italian fashion powerhouse Dolce & Gabbana’s latest “DG Loves China” online marketing campaign, obviously making the country and its consumers extremely angry, has come under fire for looking down upon China’s centuries-old culture in a racist way. On Saturday, November 18, D&G released a now-deleted post on China social media platform Weibo to promote its upcoming runway show in Shanghai (on November 21),in that related videos,a young Asian model in a red D&G dress appears to have trouble eating Italian foods such as pizza, pasta, and cannoli with chopsticks but finally figures it out. In a particularly garish error in tone,in the video featuring cannoli, a male narrator asked the model “is it too huge for you?”
Many social media users in China labeled this video disrespectful for Asian female upon its release. The anger has spread so quickly across the platform that Dolce & Gabbana deleted the post featuring the video less than 24 hours after its release. But that has not calmed down the angry crow
d at all. On Weibo, “Boycott Dolce” has been discussed over 18,000 times. Some users have asked that an apology to be issued—in both Chinese and English. Many Chinese consumers decided to complain about the ads and defend their culture.
One user who renamed himself as “Dead and Gone” wrote “Well, why do you think you have the right to teach Chinese how to use chopsticks in the rudest and improper way? Really chopsticks? You really wanna play that word?” “You should be respectful if you want to make money from Chinese.”
“It is not DG Loves China, but DG loves China’s RMB,” said a Weibo user. Some users noted even though the brand has hired some hot Chinese including TF Boys’ Junkai Wang and Dilraba Dilmurat to represent it, its cultural DNA and attitude towards China is ill-fitted. To note, it was not the first time for Dolce &Gabbana to get into troubles in the country on how it presented China in their advertising campaign. The desire for longevity (a long life)has long been on people’s minds, prompting an abundance of research on the effects of food and diet on the human lifespan. According to recent research from the UC Irvine Institute, drinking coffee and wine could help you live longer.
The 90+ Study evaluated more than 1,600 people over the age of 90 for their lifestyle habits and other qualities that might have contributed to their longevity.
Participants were visited every six months, when they were given various tests. Researchers also collected information about the participants’ diets, lifestyles, and medical histories.
They found out that two of the habits that helped preserve lives the most are drinking alcohol and coffee. “I have no explanation for it,’,admitted Dr. Claudia Kawas,“but I do firmly believe that moderate (适度的)drinking improves longevity.” So should we all be drinking more coffee and wi ne? While that would be great news, the research may not be as definitive as it seems.
“Most studies about alcohol consumption, including The 90+ Study, are observational, so we can only say that something about drinking is associated with health and longevity,’’ registered dietitian Jennifer Markowitz told The Daily Meal.
“I’d be curious to see if the coffee and alcohol drinkers shared other important habits or lifestyle factors that might also play into their longevity.”
In other words, it might not be th e wine and coffee that’s helping people live longer, but the two substances do have some considerable health benefits. “Wine and coffee are packed with antioxidants (抗氧化齐!J)which are known to protect our bodies from damage caused by free
radicals,” explained registered dietitian Keri Gans to The Daily Meal. “Research on antioxidants has shown several health benefits, including the possibility they may lower the risk of type 2 diabetes, improve cognitive function, decrease the risk of dementia, and lower the risk of heart disease.”
Moderate drinking can be of benefit according to other studies ——so long as it’s moderate.

(Xinhua News Agency, Oct. 15, 2017 )
安钧璨因肝癌去世Many years ago, people relied on the sun, the moon and stars to find their way around. Later, the compass was introduced. And now, we have satnav (卫星导航)systems to guide us. A satnav system uses groups of satellites to show the user’s location. They send information to a receiver, such as a smart phone, to show us where we are.
The earliest built satnav system is the Global Positioning System, which belongs to the US. Then the
re is Russia’s Globa l Navigatio (导航)Satellite System, the European Union’s Galileo and China’s own satellite navigation system, Beidou.
On October 14, 2017, an ARJ21-700 plane, which was the first domestically-produced jet equipped with the Beidou navigation system, successfully completed a test flight. The results showed the performance of the system developed by China matches that of similar systems produced abroad, according to the Commercial Aircraft Corporation of China.
Since its introduction in 2000, the Beidou navigation system has seen increasing numbers of applications linked to everyday life, from shared bikes to farming.
When it comes to shared bikes, smart locks that support Beidou chips offer more accurate positioning than others, making it easier to find a bike.
Farmers can use Beidou-enabled tractors to plow (犁)the soil and use unmanned aircraft with Beidou to sow seeds, which can improve efficiency and make better use of resources. Beidou’s farming applications have spread from Heilongjiang province to Beijing, Liaoning, Shanxi, Hubei and other regions across China.
With its many uses, the Beidou navigation system is even playing a big role in the Belt and Road Initiative (一带一路).“To date, the Beidou system has covered most parts of the Asia-Pacific region, as wel l as counties along the Silk Road Economic Belt and the 21st Century Maritime Silk Road.” said Yang Changfeng, Chief designer of the Beidou system.
Today, there are more than 20 Beidou satellites above our heads, and China plans to launch even more this year to expand the Beidou network to better serve the Belt and Road Initiative.
“As Beidou expands its overseas reach, it will be increasingly popular in the logistics (物流)
