Oct. 16 is World Food Day. The UN started the day in 1979. It reminds people not to waste food and fight hunger.
A number of people in the world still don’t have enough food to eat. The food shortage(短缺) is a big problem all over the world. Now, there are more than 1000 million hungry people in the world according to the UN. Many children go to sleep hungry, and 15 million of them die of hunger each year.
There are several reasons for food shortage. First, there are more natural disasters. Also, a growing population(人口) makes feeding everyone more difficult.
Another big reason is food waste. Most people don’t realize how much food they throw awa
y every day. The average(平均的) person throws away 50kg of food every year. According to the UN, more than one third of all food goes to waste each year.
一闪一闪亮晶晶
Over 1,300 billion kilograms of food is wasted each year. The food wasted in Europe can feed 200 million people, while in Latin America 300 million a year.
So think twice before you throw away food. You’d better order as much food as you can eat at a restaurant. If you can’t eat all, take the rest home. Some food may not taste great, but your body needs it. Keep an eye on what food you have at home. Don’t buy too much. Don’t cook too much.
When you throw away food, you are not just wasting the food itself. Resources(资源), such as energy, time and water, are also wasted while growing and cooking. So everyone should know that it is important to save food. Saving food is saving ourselves.

People are playing video games everywhere these days, whether they’re riding a bus or sitting in a restaurant. Some of them enjoy these games so much that they can’t put them down.
But is this a healthy habit? The World Health Organization (WHO) doesn’t think so. “Gaming  disorder( 障碍 )”  introduced as a mental disorder in its International Classification of Diseases. “Gaming disorder” refers to persistent (持续的) video-gaming behaviour(行为), whether online or offline. Of course, not everyone who plays video games has this disorder. It has three main characteristics (特征).
The first sign is when the player loses control over his or her gaming habits. The second is when playing games becomes more important than other activities for the player. The t
hird is when the condition leads to serious problems in the player’s personal and family life.
In fact, some countries are already working to solve this problem. South Korea has introduced a law that doesn’t allow (允许) children under 16 to play online games between midnight and Chinese tech company Ten cent is also setting limits(限制) on the time those aged between 12 and 18 years old can play it games. They can only play two hours per day.
If you have “gaming disorder”, you should ask for professional (专业的) medical help. But if your  condition is not that serious, you can use delayed gratification(延迟满足) to deal with it. For example, if you tell yourself not to play any video games on weekdays, you can allow yourself to play for three hours during the weekend. Or if you really want to play them after school you can tell yourself that you cannot do so until finishing your homework.
