For thousands of years people have told stories about heroes. Heroes are strong, brave people who help others. Today we can read stories and watch films about superheroes. What is superhero?
Superheroes have special powers which they use to do good things like helping people and fighting crime. They usually wear special clothes, like a cape(披肩). Sometimes they wear a mask so no one knows who they are. Some superheroes use tools, like Superman’s web shooter.
Modern superheroes started as stories in comic books. Superman was one of the first famous superheroes. The first Superman comic was published in 1938. Superman is an alien from the planet Krypton. He can fly and he is super strong. He is super fast and no weapons(
武器) can hurt him. The only thing that can hurt him is Kryptonite rock from his home planet.
In 1941, Wonder Woman was created. She was the first female superhero. Wonder Woman’s story comes from ancient Greek myths(神话). She has some superhuman powers like Superman. She is good at fighting and she has lots of weapons.
Sometimes superheroes have friends that help them, like Jimmy Olsen in the Superman stories. These friends are called “sidekicks”. One of the most famous sidekicks is Robin from Batman and Robin. Sometimes superheroes group together like Iron Man, Captain America and Thor in the Avengers, or the mutants(突变体) in the X-Men team.

The traveller and the lion
A traveller in South Africa once set out on a long journey. When crossing
a wide plain, far from home he saw a lion at a distance. The lion saw him at the
same time, and began slowly to follow him.
When the traveller walked fast, the lion walked fast! When he stopped, the lion stopped!①The man realised that the lion meant to follow him until dark, and then attack him.
②He was not able to run away from the lion because the lion could run faster than him. So he thought of a plan to fool it.
He came to a large rock. He hid behind the rock, where the lion could not see him. Then ta
king a branch(树枝) which he found there, he put on it his coat and his hat, so as to make it look like a man.
He then placed the branch with the coat and the hat standing in the ground above the rock. He then slipped away.
The lion stopped and watched the coat and the hat at a distance. At nightfall, it jumped onto the coat and the hat to try to kill the man.
